Urgent care and TRICARE

The short answer

Most people with TRICARE can walk into a TRICARE-authorized urgent care center without a referral. The one group that can't is active duty service members — if that's you, you need a referral first, through your military hospital or clinic or through the Nurse Advice Line, and skipping that step can leave you holding the bill.

There is also no published annual visit limit anymore. The old two-visits-a-year cap that people still repeat does not appear on TRICARE's current urgent care page.

This is about urgent care, not emergencies. For a true emergency — chest pain, trouble breathing, heavy bleeding, a head injury — call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. TRICARE does not require prior authorization for emergency care, and you should never delay it to hunt for a referral.

What it costs in 2026

Costs turn on two things people often don't know about themselves: which plan they're on, and which group their sponsor falls into. Group A means the sponsor's initial enlistment or appointment was before January 1, 2018. Group B means on or after that date. The gap between them is real money — a retiree family on Select pays $38 in Group A and $52 in Group B for the same visit.

Call the Nurse Advice Line before you drive anywhere

This is the most underused benefit TRICARE has. A registered nurse will tell you whether what you're describing needs urgent care, an emergency room, or a call to your primary care manager in the morning — and for active duty members, the line can start the referral you'd otherwise need. It's free, 24 hours a day, by phone, web chat or video chat.

Call 800-TRICARE (800-874-2273), option 1

Available 24/7 by phone, web chat and video chat in the U.S., Guam and Puerto Rico. Everyone with TRICARE can use it except US Family Health Plan and TRICARE Prime Demo enrollees. Source: tricare.mil, verified August 1, 2026.

Finding an urgent care center that takes TRICARE

"TRICARE-authorized" is the phrase that matters, and it's broader than "in network" — but network centers cost you less and file your claim for you. Which directory to search depends on your region.

Find an urgent care center who takes TRICARE where you live

Which directory you search depends on your region. TRICARE splits the United States into East and West, each run by a different company, and the four states of Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin are divided by ZIP code. Check your region by ZIP code if you're not sure.
