Therapists that accept TRICARE
The short answer
Yes — TRICARE covers outpatient mental health care, including therapy with a TRICARE-authorized provider. Finding one works the same way as finding any other civilian provider: search your regional contractor's directory, filtering for behavioral or mental health.
The referral question is where it gets specific. Active duty service members go through their primary care manager for most care. For everyone else, access to outpatient mental health is generally more direct — but requirements differ by plan, by service branch and by region, so confirm with your contractor before the first appointment rather than after it.
If you're in crisis, skip all of this. The Veterans Crisis Line serves service members, veterans and their families: dial 988 and press 1, or text 838255. It's free, confidential, available 24/7, and you do not need to be enrolled in anything or get a referral to use it.
Find a therapist in your region
Every regional contractor directory lets you filter by specialty. Search for behavioral health, mental health, psychiatry, psychology or counseling depending on what you need — and check both the network and non-network lists, since mental health providers are one of the specialties where network availability is often thin.
Find a therapist who takes TRICARE where you live
Which directory you search depends on your region. TRICARE splits the United States into East and West, each run by a different company, and the four states of Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin are divided by ZIP code. Check your region by ZIP code if you're not sure.

Free options that don't touch your TRICARE benefit
Several counseling channels exist alongside TRICARE, cost nothing, and don't generate a claim or a medical record entry. For a lot of families these are the faster route to a first conversation.
- Military OneSource offers free non-medical counseling to service members and families — short-term, confidential, and available by phone, video or in person. militaryonesource.mil, 800-342-9647.
- Military and Family Life Counselors are placed on installations and provide confidential non-medical counseling with no records kept.
- Chaplains offer completely confidential counsel, with a privilege that is broader than a therapist's in the military context.
- Your military hospital or clinic may have behavioral health on site — often the quickest path if you're already enrolled there. Find the closest one.
"Non-medical counseling" is the term worth knowing: it covers everyday stresses — deployment, moving, relationships, grief — but not diagnosis or treatment of a mental health condition. For that you need the TRICARE benefit and an authorized provider.
What to ask before your first session
- "Are you in network with Humana Military (East) or TriWest (West)?"
- "Are you a TRICARE-authorized provider?" — some therapists take private pay only.
- "Do you need a referral or authorization from my regional contractor before we start?"
- "Do you file TRICARE claims, or do I pay and file myself?"
- If you're active duty: ask your primary care manager first — going straight to a civilian therapist without a referral can leave the cost with you.
A word on confidentiality for service members. Worry about what a commander will see keeps a lot of people from asking for help. The rules are narrower than the rumors — command notification applies in specific circumstances, not routinely. If that's what's stopping you, the non-medical counseling options above keep no records at all, and a chaplain conversation is fully privileged. Ask the question before you decide it's not worth the risk.
